Geographical position of Crete

The geographical position of Crete in the Mediterranean is such that it can be described as strategic.

Serving as a crossroads between three continents, besides its huge geopolitical importance that it holds, Crete’s position is also associated with the development of its climate and thus with its biodiversity (flora and fauna).

A place of intense contrasts, Crete lies between Europe, Asia and Africa, serving as a kind of bridge uniting the three continents both geographically and culturally.

Its mountain ranges are the «seal” of the island. On one hand, Mount Psiloreitis and on the other the most impressive mountain ranges the White Mountains in the western part of the island.

A few kilometers to the North, the scenery changes drastically and gives way to the fertile olive groves and vineyards that extend smoothly to the sea.

There is not much space between the sea and the mountains, so one will not encounter vast plains.

All three of the large mountain ranges are home to fertile plateaus, with the most famous of them being the White Mountains, the plateau of Nidas on Psiloreitis and that of Lasithi on Diktis.

The heart of Crete beats both in the high mountains of the island, but also in its sunny beaches, with its coastline exceeding 1.000km.
