This journey, as strange as it seems, began with the catastrophic fire of 2003. A blaze that consumed vast tracts of land in Skordalou, the birthplace of Petros Marinakis, the visionary and creator of the current Botanical Garden, leaving nothing but ash behind. The financial and ecological disaster for the area was immense. About one hundred thousand olive trees of the "tsounati" variety, over 400 years old, were burned...
"The fire left nothing but ash of our property" recalls the Garden's visionary.
" Facing the ruins, his only thought was to replant their land and revive their place. The abrupt destruction of the natural environment brought him immense sadness, compounded by the disconnection of people from nature in modern times. Among these reflections, the idea of the Garden was born, aiming to reconnect people with nature, educate children about trees and fruits, and offer a glimpse of unforced knowledge and freedom.
Amidst these reflections, the idea of the Garden was conceived.
The journey from the conception of the Botanical Garden of Crete to its realization was arduous, requiring immense patience, dedication, and perseverance. The park, unique in Europe, continuously evolves, introducing new plant varieties and experiences. Born from the ashes of the 2003 fire, it stands as a peaceful sanctuary, offering a connection with nature. A charred olive tree on its premises symbolizes hope and resilience, reminding visitors of new beginnings even in the face of loss."
