WILD GOAT the Cretans Aigagrous (Capra aegagrus)
This animal has had its home on our island ever since ancient times. Homer often refers to it in his epic poems (the Odissey and the Iliad) . Its picture is also often seen on frescoes, seals and even coins as a symbol of everything which is beautiful, wild and untamed. Both the animal and its name is related to legends, tradition and songs of Crete. It used to live all over the island but in recent years it is only found in the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) mountain range and in the Samarian Gorge or on other paths.
